UNDER COVER SUNDAY PRESENTS: SYVERS + IN THE ATTIC + CRYSTAL CITY (duo)
Doors 6PM | Show 6:30 PM | No cover/free show
SYVERS are an indie folk-electronic duo hailing from Minneapolis. The husband-wife fronted band brings together a raw and honest vulnerability focused on the process. This common tie is the thread that led them to write their debut release, the Au Fond Sessions.
The 3-track EP, produced by the Emmy-award winning Taylor Lewin, is a collection of songs with an intimate, bare-bones gaze into the heart of relationship and the spectrum of its human experience. This release landed the duo a spot as a New & Notable artist on Noisetrade music and shows across the Midwest.
Pulling from their respective spheres of indie influences, the duo sweep haunting layered vocals over an organic-electronic blend of synths, strings and effected beats to brew a dark blend of moody shades reminiscent of Bonobo, S. Carey, and J. Views juxtaposed against the emotion-filled drippings of Liza Anne, Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and the xx.
As a staple of their shows, live-looping crossfades the studio composition process with the stage. With threads of samples, droning backdrops, and howling vocals crafted on the fly, capturing these inspired moments will take a new form each time their mantra is exhaled.
Continuing in the stride of their first release, Syvers is in the process of completing their first full-length studio album. The Weight & The Sound is set to be released in 2018 as Syvers brings an intimate connection of struggle, intervention, and the dance of dark and light to their audiences.
In the Attic
IN THE ATTIC is an alternative band from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with five core members; Grant Blades, Tyler Burkle, Brennan Graeve, Piper McGee, and Tanner Parks. Tyler and Tanner have known each other for over a decade. They met Grant in high school where they formed In the Attic and started White Sofa Records. They have released two singles from their first record, The Same Different Sound, called “Brother” and “People.” They recorded their singles independently. After high school, Grant and Tyler attended Kirkwood Community College where Tyler met Brennan. Brennan introduced In the Attic to Sine Rife at Rife Recording Studio, where they started recording their new and old material. In the Attic released The Same Different Sound in December 2016. During the Summer of 2017, In the Attic stumbled upon violinist Piper McGee, shortly after she received her degree in music from Coe College. Now, the group is working hard on their second record with Sine Rife.
CRYSTAL CITY is fronted by Dave Helmer and Sam Drella. Helmer is a Midwestern singer/songwriter from central Iowa with blue-collar roots. Heavily influenced by Paul Westerberg, Tom Petty, John Prine and Townes Van Zandt, Helmer’s songs are approachable and relatable, touching on themes of love and loss, being good to each other and celebrating life.
In 2009, Crystal City formed as a duo, recording their self-titled acoustic EP just three months after meeting. In the years to follow, the duo grew into a full band. In 2014, their full-length album "Change" was released and was met with positive reviews from around the country due to its blend of rock and acoustic songs.
Following the successful reception of "Change", the band spent the next few years doing multiple tours around the country, sharing the stage with national acts such as The Whigs, The Good Life, HoneyHoney, Matthew Logan Vasquez and The Ike Reilly Assassination.
"Bartenderly" is an album born from life in the bar scene, from the joy of a night out with loved ones to a cold one keeping you company during the tough times we all have experienced. "Bartenderly" is the working person’s watering hole album. Everyone can feel comfort from these songs.
Taking on dual personalities, Crystal City plays regularly around the Midwest as a Rock ’n’ Roll outfit as well as performing more intimately as a fingerstyle duo, with rich harmonies and melodic whistling, comparable to the likes of Andrew Bird. Crystal City’s classic songwriting can warm a weary heart and get bedraggled feet stomping.
